Funky hand crafted brooches, necklaces and earrings

Netdesk was asked by Francesca Harland a local jewellery maker to develop a simple but funky site to sell her jewellery from.

So, that’s what we did – built a site that showcases her hand crafted jewellery, as well as making it easy for customers to buy her brooches, necklaces and earrings.

Francesca is really happy with the result and has already taken orders on the new site! Go on ladies – you know you want! :-)

Swindon to become the first UK city with Free WiFi.

Swindon to become the first UK city with Free WiFi.Swindon Borough Council is the first authority in the UK to provide free Internet access for all its residents.

Other UK cities have had trials of the schemes, but this is the first time an entire county area will be covered by council-backed public Wi-Fi.

The scheme, in partnership with the private sector will roll out free connection to the Internet and free line rental and connection charge for the 186,000 Swindonites within the next four months.

Swindon has a 35% ownership in Digital City UK, the company created to begin the service, and expects to cash in on similar roll-outs of the technology to other towns and cities across the UK.

Some 1,400 secure access points will be fitted around Swindon and subscribers to the service – to be called Signal – will have limited access but could pay for 20Mb upgrades.

The company was set up in partnership with the concept’s originator Rikki Hunt and digital technology firm aQovia.

“Digital City’s business model is built around subsidising free access with revenues from business and community services that are delivered over our wireless network. This innovative partnership demonstrates a viable way forward for other towns and cities.” said Mustafa Arif, director of aQovia.

For more information on the scheme and to read the official press release, visit www.getsignal.co.uk.

Twitter Applications Report: who is hot and who is not!

Picture 2It is time for another look at the global Twitter Applications ecosphere. Who is scoring best? Who are the newcomers? Who are the losers?

As you might know from previous updates we use traffic estimates from Compete. Yes, these are estimates and we are aware of that. This method also rewards those services that have a website that has a lot of visitors and ignores services that use software such as Seesmic Desktop or Tweetie. It is however the best way we know of right now to compare these third party applications objectively.

This month is especially interesting because Compete has adjusted their numbers and is now discounting the iframes used by TweetMeme. What probably happened is this: the TweetMeme retweet button is installed as an iframe on blogs. If you enter a blog and see 12 posts below each other all with a TweetMeme button Compete would count 12 extra visits to TweetMeme. At least, that is what we think. Starting in October these iFrame visits seem to be ignored by Compete which means that TweetMeme which means it goes from the first place in the list to the 6th spot. Everybody else in the top 5 simply moves up a spot.

Don’t worry TweetMeme, you are still doing VERY well at #6 and we still love your service.

A few Twitter services are doing very well this month: Twitpic’s traffic rose 67,83% since last month with 4,4 million uniques. You would think Flic.kr and Yfrog would be catching up by now but Yfrog only grew 5,3% and Flic.kr hardly moved with 0,5% extra traffic.

Twitterholic seems to lose its position even more this month with 15% less traffic than the month before. Its closest competitor TwitterCounter (owned by moi!) is now #5 in the list and grew 67% in traffic.

Retweet, the TweetMeme competitor, is doing well too and seem to grow steady as it moves from the 14th spot to number 10 in October. It is still a lot smaller than Tweetmeme but clearly growing well. WeFollow seems not to grow at all with only 0,1% extra traffic. This seems odd as it is a high profile Twitter service that gets a lot of attention and it was even acquired, or assimilated rather, by Digg.

The top 23 Twitter Applications:

Younger Women Step to the Social Beat

Generation Y females have redefined the idea of “peer group” to encompass online friends, bloggers and anonymous reviewers, according to the “Why Y Women?” report from PopSugar and Radar Research.

Looking to this expansive group of peers, rather than experts or celebrities, Gen Y women are particularly influenced by social media.

Younger women are nearly twice as likely as their Gen X counterparts to say they had discovered a new brand or product when a friend mentioned it in an online status update. They are also significantly more influenced by blogs, by both professionals and especially by “someone like me.”

Methods Used to Discover New Brands/Products According to US Female Internet Users, by Generation, September 2009 (% of respondents)

Telling friends in person or on the phone is still by far the most common way for Gen Y women to spread the word about products or brands they love. But they post about products and brands on social networking sites or online forums nearly twice as much as older women. Gen X women, on the other hand, are more likely than younger females to share information via e-mail.

Methods Used to Share Information About Brands/Products They Like* According to US Female Internet Users, by Generation, September 2009 (% of respondents)

Further, with even two-thirds of Gen X women considering their younger counterparts trendsetters, according to the survey, the potential pop culture influence of social marketing is multiplied.

Mr Youth, which has studied “millennial moms”—mothers around the same age as PopSugar’s Gen Y women—has also found the peer group an important influencer.

“With moms it is even a stronger source, as moms have always found it important to ask other moms before making important decisions that affect their families and kids,” Brandon Evans, managing partner and chief strategy officer at Mr Youth, told Media Life magazine. “With social media, it became much easier for them to seek out advice on a variety of topics from a wider net of people, so it quickly gained in influence.”

… and another thing

Did you know that more people access the internet using a mobile device than a PC?

Facebook currently has in excess of 350 million active users on global basis. Six months ago, this was 250m… meaning around a 40% increase of users in less than half a year.
